The Wellness Wheel
- work/life balance solutions
Too many of us sacrifice our lives to win the game - status, fame and fortune
"Fulfilled, effective people" - It is frightening how many organisational leaders talk about the importance of their people and then act in a way that shows little respect or sense of their value. In particular, machinery shows on the balance sheet and is almost certainly well maintained whereas people get left out of the value equation and little effort is put into their maintenance. Yet people are the only source of long term competitive advantage; in principle, every other asset, concrete or abstract can be reproduced elsewhere. To realise this advantage, people need to feel respected, to feel valued, and fulfilled in what they do. Achieving this is a joint responsibility between the individual and the organisation - the individual taking ultimate responsibility for his/her lifestyle and the sustainability of their approach to work. The organisation is responsibile for supporting the individual in this task. One of the problems in today's world is that so much of the political and legal framework actively discourages people from taking such responsibility and this is compounded by organisations that then do little to encourage trust, involvement and self-esteem.
Among the activities in which The Human Energy Centre typically finds itself involved within this focus area are:
- Managing stress (this is an individual response to pressure for which the individual has to take responsibility; the organisation is responsible for minimising the workplace pressure and supporting the individual in strengthening his/her stress tolerance )
- Building trust, involvement and recognition (this requires commitment and effort both from individuals and from the organisation's management, starting at the top)
- Creating work/life balance and sustainable working - working styles and natural rhythms (individuals don't always like to acknowledge that they are responsible for their own work/life balance and managers can find it difficult to see people as other than human 'machines'. We help individuals actively achieve their desired lifestyle and sustainability in their approach to work.)
